Success Trait No. 1 Believe In Yourself

Filed under: Success Guideline — admin at 1:34 am on Monday, December 31, 2007

Achievers say that you must have positive self-esteem in order to succeed in your world. I have interviewed successful people in Silicon Valley and they say that the number one trait you must have is to “believe in yourself.”

Years ago I thought, What does that really mean? How strong does your self-esteem have to be? How do I know? After many years of attending workshops, reading and practicing I came to this conclusion: “once you have a strong sense of self-esteem it is the most powerful force in my world.” It is like standing still and no one can push you down no matter how hard they try. If someone says you are no good it doesn’t register because you have past experiences that tell you otherwise. You KNOW you are good at what you do. You are PROUD of yourself and no one has to give you a trophy or award to prove it to you. You do just fine because you believe in yourself.

The Silicon Valley role models I interviewed were assertive and confident in their decisions and activities–they believed they could do what they aimed to do. They had no doubt even though at the time they were starting something new. They didn’t know how to do it but they had confidence in themselves that they would accomplish their goals.

Eight year old Nancy learned definitively that practice builds self-confidence. She loved to draw and wanted to be a Disney animator someday. With revelation, she recognized that she must do the things she loved to be happy. She knew what she wanted and went after it with a fierce conviction of her ability to do it. No one could discourage her. She just wouldn’t listen. She insisted on going to an art college instead of a business college as her mom suggested. Nancy stayed focused, got a job working on a new animated series years ago and today she is one of the directors on the long-running, successful sit-com series, The Simpson’s. It’s a good thing she didn’t listen to me or today she could be a miserable administrator. Wellthat would never have happened because she knew what she wanted and she went after it.

Self-esteem is fleeting. We must continue to work on it at all times. Why do some people fall apart when they lose their jobs, and others move forward and look for the next opportunity? It is all in how they feel about themselves. If you had a bad childhood and your parents were always telling you that you were no good and wouldn’t amount to anything, then I’ll tell you the same thing someone said to me, “Get over it!” You are an adult now. You can make choices. Take workshops, read success-oriented books, hang around positive thinking people, and practice.

Once your self-esteem is on solid ground the world is yours.

Become A Successful And Dangerous Person!

Filed under: Success Guideline — admin at 1:20 am on Sunday, December 30, 2007

Action is a powerful but dangerous and frightening weapon. The moment you start taking action towards your dreams, you become a person who changes the status quo and this can terrify people including yourself. A person who takes action is a danger to our usual way of life because they destroy the comfort zones and ruts we like to bury ourselves in.

On the other hand, if you take action you will also become a person who can fulfil not only your own dreams but those of others. Those who take action become the leaders of those who are too lazy or timid to take action on their own.

Action beats talking every time but if you can both talk and take action you may become a legend in your own life time.

I remember reading ‘The Seven Pillars of Wisdom’ by Lawrence of Arabia when I was still at school but I did not notice these lines at the time. Now I can appreciate the wisdom and understanding behind them.

“All men dream: but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds
wake in the day to find that it was vanity:
but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men,
for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible.”

Lawrence took action with open eyes to make possible his dream of liberating Arabia from the Turks. He became a dangerous man to be taken seriously. He did not just dream of liberation by night in the recesses of his mind.

He became more Arab than the Arabs and risked life and limb in daring attacks over vast desert spaces to reach his enemies when they least expected it. He took massive and sometimes desperate action. He also knew how to persuade others to support his dream.

He did what other men said was impossible. He flew like an eagle whilst others clucked like chickens. He soon became a legendary leader in his own life time.

Dream then in the day time and act on your dream with open eyes to make it possible. You may well become a legend at the very least to your own friends and family if not to a nation.

Take at least one action towards your dream every single day. Your dream will soon start to seem possible. It may take less time than you expect but it may take longer. If you keep your dream alive with daily action and do not give up, it will become a reality.

The Successful Always Protect their Heart and Mind

“A great man is one who has not lost his child’s heart.”

-Mencius

Protect your ability to grow, learn, and love in order to fully experience the magic of life. Children are fearless explorers of their world. Children are curious about the world around them; they know no fear for they have not been indoctrinated with the limiting need to fear. At the time of our birth the only biological fears we have are the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. The many conceptual fears that we develop are developed later in life. Great achievers in our times have been able to maintain their child’s heart; they have maintained a belief in the world of possibility. These great people do not allow themselves to be shut down and imprisoned by their own doubts or perceived inadequacies.

“You must maintain your own ideals and study properly or you will lose the way”

-Miyamoto Musashi

Respect yourself and your chosen path. Do not compromise your goals and the things that are important. Seeking growth and education in your chosen way allows you to fully reach your potential. Forsaking that which makes you exceptional for something of lesser value, all in the name of “fitting in” is tragically a common occurrence. How many revolutionary ideas, concepts and inventions die at the hands of conformity? If any thing exceptional is to be done at all, it most be done in spite of the jeers and ridicules of the short-sighted. It is not enough to merely have a good idea. An idea must be strengthened with the grit and fortitude of the human spirit.
